sideways

A rally codriver,
in your pocket.

Plan a route. sideways finds every corner along the way, rates each one from 1 to 6 (plus hairpins and squares), and calls out the pacenotes through your speakers as you drive.

An algorithm that turns any route into pacenotes.

Plan a route with waypoints, or drop in a .gpx file from anywhere on the web. sideways reads the geometry and computes the exact curvature at every point along the road.

Then it classifies each corner using the same scale rally codrivers use: 1 through 6, plus squares and hairpins. No driving the road first. No manual annotation. The pacenotes are ready before you turn the key.

"Absolutely fantastic. Correct timing on all the calls and works wonders, even on tight roads with a lot of corners right on top of each other. 10/10."

"Been playing around with it for a bit now and it does everything I'd want it to. Of course there's always things that could be improved but it does what it says and it does it great. Surprised at how well it works and the fact that someone has actually made an app like this. Absolutely 10/10."

"Great app, accurate pacenotes. A lot of customization. Been looking for something like this for years, found it randomly on Insta. Lots of fun with both car and bike."

Beyond the basics.

Works offline

Save favourites at home and drive them with zero signal. Made for mountain passes and dead zones.

Demo mode

Play the whole route through at your desk, with full codriver callouts, before you leave the house.

Export to spreadsheet

Pull every pacenote into a CSV. Print it, share it with a friend, keep a copy in the glovebox. Old-school binder workflow, fully supported.

Tune your codriver

Adjust the volume, how far ahead of each corner the calls land, and how much detail you want to hear.

Follow along.

I post new features and clips of sideways out on real stages on Instagram, and write the longer stuff (roadmap, behind-the-scenes, what I'm working on) on Substack.

Try it out now.

Free on iOS and Android. Download the app, pick a road, and let your co-driver call the corners. Your next favourite drive is one tap away.

Frequently asked questions.

Is this only for rally drivers? +

No. sideways works on any road, whether it's a mountain pass, a coastal route, or your favourite Sunday drive. On public roads, always follow the rules of the road and local speed limits.

Does it work without a signal? +

Yes. Save your favourite roads ahead of time and the app uses them fully offline, including the map and the voice calls. Made for mountain passes where signal disappears.

Which devices are supported? +

iPhone running iOS 15+ (currently in beta) and Android phones running Android 9+.

How does it know where the corners are? +

A custom corner-detection algorithm scans the geometry of any route you plan and rates each corner from 1 (flat-out) to 6 (slow), plus hairpins and squares.

Can I bring my own routes? +

Yes. Import .gpx files from anywhere, or build routes from scratch with the in-app planner.

How much does it cost? +

The app is in an early stage and currently free to use.
